Transparency
is a strategic value for NGOs because it responds to the confidence placed in
them and stimulates the public to place confidence in them strengthening
credibility and legitimacy of these organizations. Starting with an initial
reflection on the management of NGOs and a definition of the terminology the
author shows the major aspects of transparency and accountability policies:
target audience, contents and instruments. Lastly, the author shows three
concrete initiatives on self-monitoring promoted by the Spanish Coordinating
Committee for NGOs which attempts to respond to the need to foster more
coherence between values and principles these organizations contend to have as
such as well as concerning their actions.
