Solidarity and efficiency, together better
This paper approaches non-profit organizations developing social action through discourse analysis of some of their agents. Non-profit organizations constitute a social realm whose action is subject to critique and legitimation requirements due to differing social demands and expectations, as well as the inherent complexity of the field. Different, even opposing conceptions about their aims and models of action involve a risk of tensions and splits within the field, as well as a need to bring into line points of view in order to find some cohesion. Boltanski and Thévenot’s theoretical model on ‘économies de la grandeur’ is used here to show three main conflicts or debates: one about the professionalization of the field, another one regarding its political dimension and a third one dealing with the universalist versus particularist nature of its undertakings.
